It is not related to linux. Once you set the cdrom boot first, you should boot up the winxp cd at least. No matter what OS / bootloader in your harddisk.
1. Make sure your winxp cd / cdrom works and readable (no scratch) 2. cdrom is set to the first boot device 3. boot up your pc with the winxp cd in your cdrom drive 4. “Press any key to boot from cdrom …” - press enter when you see this sentence
